The Stephen Charnock Project

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good (Psalm 14:1).

From this verse Stephen Charnock begins his superb work, “The Existence and Attributes of God.” Long have I waited for a digital version of this book to emerge. Having neither currently found the work in digital form, nor anyone who is planning to do so, I have established this project. My reason for doing so is eloquently stated by the original publishers: if these elaborate discourses of this holy man, through the Lord’s blessing, become a means of promoting holiness in thee, and stir thee up to love and live to the God of his praise (Ps. cix. 1), we are well assured that his end in preaching them is answered, and so is ours in publishing them.” There can be no greater exercise than gazing with the heart and mind upon God. I hope that this project will help many along to that place where they are able to say along with the Psalmist, “Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable” (Psalms 145:3).

May You Gaze in Wonder,

Your Humble Servant

I’m working with the distributed proofreading project. They have Charnock’s Volume II in their proofing rounds. I’m now on the goodness of God, and am captivated by it.

I am not amazed that someone is finally putting Charnock’s works on the web, I am amazed it has taken so long. Thank you my dearest brothers and sisters in Christ for your labors. I only wish you would skip forward the the chapter on “The Holiness of God”, which should be required reading for everyone who names the name of Christ.

Thank you for this project. For many years, when I feel my heart cold and unmotivated, Charnock has been one of two books I pick up and open randomly to read a paragraph – any paragraph. I’ve decided to make it a goal to read it in its entirety this year, something I’ve never done. That’s why I looked on the web to see if there was anything out there. I can’t always have my book on hand, but thanks to you I have this website. Thank you very much. I wish you success. I’m not in a position to help with the project, but will pray for it every time I use it.

Thank you so much for this labor of love for the Savior. I appreciate the time it takes to do this work, and it works well with me. My brain seems to approach full rapidly with thoughts from Charnock’s pages. May the Lord give you strength and endurance.
    Regards,
    Wayne
